Student Email Migration FAQs

What is the student email migration?

Microsoft is converting all higher education Live@edu customers to Office 365 for education.

When is the migration?

The migration will begin on Saturday, August 31st and should be finished by Saturday, September 7th.

Why are we migrating at the beginning of the semester?

Microsoft and the migration implementer chose the date for the migration. The university was not able to select the date.

How long will it take to migrate to Office 365?

We expect the migration to be completed by Saturday, September 7th. Email accounts will be migrated on an ongoing basis throughout the week. This means your account may be migrated at a different time from your friends

Will email be available during the migration?

Email will be available during most of the migration. There will be a small window of time during a synchronization process when your account will not be available. After the synchronization occurs, you must change your Network Username password in my.sc.edu at https://my.sc.edu/apps/username in order to access your email.

How will we know when the migration is completed?

Once the migration has been completed, notifications will appear on my.sc.edu, Blackboard, the UTS website, and the UTS Facebook and Twitter accounts. You can also attempt to log in to your email. If you receive an error, please change your Network Username password on my.sc.edu at https://my.sc.edu/apps/username and try logging in to email again. Also, make sure you use the correct URL for Office 365. You will need to log in at the URL that corresponds to your campus:

Aiken - http://outlook.com/email.usca.edu
Beaufort - http://outlook.com/email.uscb.edu
Columbia and 2-year campuses - http://outlook.com/email.sc.edu
Upstate - http://email.uscupstate.edu

Why are we changing email systems?

Microsoft is migrating all of their Live@edu customers to Office 365.

Will my email address change?

Your email address will remain the same. You will log in to Office 365 with the same email address and password that you did in Live@edu. However, the URL you use to log in to Office 365 is different. You will log in with the URL that corresponds with your campus:
Aiken - http://outlook.com/email.usca.edu
Beaufort - http://outlook.com/email.uscb.edu
Columbia and 2-year campuses - http://outlook.com/email.sc.edu
Upstate - http://email.uscupstate.edu

Will I lose any email during the migration?

No email will be lost in the migration.

How do I access Office 365?

You will access Office 365 with the URL that corresponds with your campus. You will no longer be able to access your USC email account using Outlook.com, Live.com, or Hotmail.com.
Aiken - http://outlook.com/email.usca.edu
Beaufort - http://outlook.com/email.uscb.edu
Columbia and 2-year campuses - http://outlook.com/email.sc.edu
Upstate - http://email.uscupstate.edu

Is the interface for Office 365 different from Live@edu?

The interface in Office 365 is only slightly different from Live@edu. Both programs are Microsoft Outlook, so they have the same general look and feel. The main difference is there will be no USC logo and the garnet will be replaced by the standard Microsoft color scheme.

I cannot log in to my email. What should I do?

Once the migration has been completed, you will need to change your Network Username password on my.sc.edu at https://my.sc.edu/apps/username to log in to email. Also, make sure you use the correct URL for Office 365. You will need to log in at the URL that corresponds to your campus:

Aiken - http://outlook.com/email.usca.edu
Beaufort - http://outlook.com/email.uscb.edu
Columbia and 2-year campuses - http://outlook.com/email.sc.edu
Upstate - http://email.uscupstate.edu

If you still have trouble, contact the UTS Service Desk.

What will be different in Office 365?

  1. You must use the URL that corresponds to your campus. You will no longer be able to log in to your email at Outlook.com, Live.com, or Hotmail.com.

    Aiken - http://outlook.com/email.usca.edu
    Beaufort - http://outlook.com/email.uscb.edu
    Columbia and 2-year campuses - http://outlook.com/email.sc.edu
    Upstate - http://email.uscupstate.edu

  2. Office 365 contains email, calendar, and contacts only. The SkyDrive and Windows Messenger are located in your Microsoft Account. See the FAQs below on the Organizational Account and Microsoft Account for more information.
  3. Your inbox can now be up to 25GB. The maximum size with Live@edu was 10GB.
  4. You can send attachments up to 25MB in size.
  5. The interface no longer contains USC branding (no garnet or USC logo).
  6. The links to USC sites, such as Blackboard, are no longer on the email screen.
  7. You now have two accounts:
    1. Organizational Account - Your official USC email account with access to email, calendar, and contacts.
    2. Microsoft Account - Your personal account to use SkyDrive, Windows Live Messenger, and other Microsoft Services you accessed with your USC account before the migration.

What is my Organizational Account?

Your organizational account is your official USC email account with access to email, calendar, and contacts. Your email address is the same as it was with Live@edu, e.g. username@email.sc.edu. Your password is still your Network Username password.

What is a Microsoft Account?

After the migration, you will have a separate, personal account with Microsoft. This account provides access to the SkyDrive, Windows Live Messenger, and other Microsoft Services you accessed with your USC account before the migration. Your email address for your personal account is the same as your USC email account, e.g. username@email.sc.edu. Your password is the Network Username password you used to log in to email before the migration on Saturday, August 31st. This password will not synchronize with your Network Username password. The password can be changed using Microsoft’s password change process.

Whom do I contact if I have questions about my Organization Account?
