Remembering Dr. Thorne Compton

Please join the College of Arts & Sciences in remembering Dr. Thorne Compton, who passed away on April 28. Dr. Compton’s commitment to the university and the college spanned four decades.

He was an undergraduate here in the mid-1960s, and he earned a Ph.D. in literature and joined the faculty in 1969. Over the next three decades, he served as professor; senior associate dean of Arts and Sciences; chair of the Department of Theatre, Speech and Dance; interim chair of the Department of Art; interim director for both the Institute for Southern Studies and the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology; and chairperson of the University’s 2001 Bicentennial celebration.

He was known in the University community of students, faculty, and staff as someone filled with insight, warmth, and kindness, and he will be sorely missed.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
