The Office of the Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences will convene two new faculty committees during the 2022-2023 academic year:

By-Laws Task Force

The By-Laws Task Force will be responsible for drafting an initial set of by-laws for the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition to researching and writing the document itself, the committee’s work will entail developing a college-wide process for review and approval.

The By-Laws Task Force will be composed of 10 elected tenured, tenure-track or professional track faculty members (as well as Committee Chair, Associate Dean Dr. Nina Levine). Faculty will be appointed to a term of up to two years. The expectation is that the committee will meet monthly with the aim of completing a draft for review and approval by the College by April 2023.

Faculty Budget Committee

The Faculty Budget Committee will advise the Dean on budget and resource allocation policies affecting curriculum, instruction, research, and staffing within the College of Arts and Sciences in order to ensure overall strategic alignment.

The Faculty Budget Committee will be composed of 7 tenured or tenure-track faculty members, four of whom are elected and three appointed by the Dean. Faculty will be appointed to a two-year term. The committee will be convened by the Dean during the academic year as dictated by the College’s budget processes and, when necessary, provide additional advice to the Dean on other financial matters. Faculty Budget Committee members are not expected to have expertise in budget and finance.

Election Guidelines

  1. Eligible faculty may self-nominate or be nominated by others to run for election to either or both committees.
  2. The expectation is that a faculty member would only serve on one of the two committees.
  3. If elected, current members of the Dean’s Advisory Group (DAG) or the Academic Planning and Curriculum Group (ACPG) may resign to serve on either of the new committees.
  4. If an elected faculty member is or expects to be on sabbatical leave during the term of appointment, a replacement member will be appointed for the period of leave.
