Course of Study
Mathematics graduate students at the University of South Carolina have the option of pursuing research in a variety of pure and applied fields, culminating in a Ph.D or master's degree. Ph.D students have the option of completing a concentration in applied and computational mathematics.
Our Students
The average number of Ph.D students in our program in a given academic year over the past five years is 53. About 30 percent of our students are women, about 40 percent are international students, and about 97 percent of them receive substantial financial assistance in the form of tuition abatement and a stipend. We offer most Ph.D students support for up to five years, pending yearly evaluations.
Graduation and Beyond
With few exceptions, all Ph.D students who pass the qualifying and comprehensive exams graduate in four or five years.
In recent years, our Ph.D graduates have taken postdoctoral appointments at Arizona State, U. Delaware, Georgia Tech, Harvard, Max Planck, Penn St., Queens U., UC-San Diego, U. Southern California, Texas A&M, U. Utah, and Wake Forest. Our graduates have also taken jobs with Ernst & Young, Microsoft, Google, NSA, NASA, Texas Instruments, and Wells Fargo.
Ph.D

M.A.
The M.A. is designed primarily for students who wish to enter a Ph.D. program in mathematics. A student’s program of study for this degree is usually narrower than the M.S. in scope but more intense in content.
M.S.
The M.S. is designed primarily for students who seek broad and intensive preparation for teaching in a junior college or working in industry.
M.M.
The Master of Mathematics degree is designed primarily for students who seek a broad, thorough training in mathematics which includes course work specifically designed to meet the needs of secondary-school teachers for whom SC certification is not an issue, and for those intending to teach at the junior/community college level.
