Carolina Distinguished Professor Mark Smith has been appointed by the U.S. Commission
on Civil Rights as a member of its South Carolina advisory committee for a four-year
term beginning July 17. Smith is a history professor and director of research at the
Institute of Southern Studies.
Three award winners honored at SCCC annual meeting
Annie Thibault, Tracie Lewis and Frank Berger of the Colon Cancer Prevention Network
were recently honored with a “Founder Award” at the fourth annual meeting of the Southeastern
Colorectal Cancer Consortium in Little Rock, Arkansas. The trio was recognized for
recruiting leaders from each of 14 Southeastern states and Puerto Rico, and initiating
the annual meeting. The consortium is a regional cooperative that comes together to
discuss issues relating to colorectal cancer prevention and screening. Thibault is
director of the Colon Cancer Prevention Network, Lewis is the community outreach director,
and Berger is the research and outreach director.
