I completed my Ph.D. in Sociology and Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies at the University of Michigan, where I received interdisciplinary multi-method training in the social sciences and humanities. I joined the faculty at the University of South Carolina in 2015. From 2018-2019, I served as elected Chair of the Section on the Sociology of Sexualities of the American Sociological Association.
Substantive research interests: Body and Embodiment, Families, LGBTQ Identities and Communities, Sex and Gender, Sexualities, Qualitative Methods, Feminist Epistemologies and Methodologies
Department cluster: Social Identities, Inequalities, and Institutions
Research overview: My research is at the intersection of sociological inquiry into contemporary families, genders, sexualities, and bodies considered marginal, as well as social actors’ management of stigma and discrimination processes. My research has been funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and American Council of Learned Societies.
Current projects: My latest research project is a three-year, international, collaborative, qualitive study of transgender pregnancy. Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (£502,102; PI: Sally Hines), I serve as the sole United States co-Investigator for this project spanning the U.K., U.S., Australia, and Italy.
