The University of South Carolina recruits for the Graduate Directing program through the University/Resident Theatre Association (URTA) audition/interview process, as well as by direct outreach to Jesse Jou, Head of the Graduate Directing program. Applicants invited to join the program must also complete application requirements and be accepted for admission to the University of SC Graduate School.
Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree with documented evidence of professional work as a theatre director and should provide the following:
- CV/Resume outlining theatrical or artistic experience
- An unofficial undergraduate transcript for preliminary assessment (formal application to the University will require the applicant to submit an official transcript).
- Three letters of recommendation from people who can speak to your artistic and/or academic work and potential as a leader.
- A personal statement describing your artistic goals and philosophy (one-page maximum).
- Additional Materials:
- Cover letter that describes their journey to readiness for graduate study in the theatre (two-page maximum).
- A portfolio of no more than three directing projects, specifically including director’s concept statements, interpretive analyses, production photos, reviews, or links to brief videos. Portfolios may be sent as a PDF or link to a website.
Assistantships and Tuition Support
Graduate directing students receive an assistantship, tuition support, and a health insurance subsidy. Graduate students on assistantship become employees of the university for a commitment of 16 hours per week and receive mentorship and guidance to support their growth. Assistantships for graduate directing students may include opportunities to teach at the undergraduate level. Students are also eligible to apply for competitive graduate scholarships, grants, and fellowships at the University.
