Podcast Production and Editing Intern for the Crux of the Story

Seeking a detail-oriented and proactive intern to assist with the production of The Crux podcast This role, supervised by the Kennedy Greenhouse Studio Manager, Britt Hogg,  involves managing the entire podcast production process. Responsibilities include recording episodes using Riverside.fm every Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., editing and refining content, and publishing episodes to SoundCloud, Spotify, and iTunes platforms.

This internship offers a hands-on opportunity to gain valuable experience in all aspects of podcast production, from initial recording to final publication as well as the opportunity to meet and work with some of the world’s top communicators.  


Responsibilities:

Recording:

  • Serve as the technical director during the podcast recording sessions.
  • Assist host, Mike Fernandez, with scheduling and inviting guests using Riverside.fm.
  • Coordinate with Mike and Britt to confirm guest information, dates, times.
  • Monitor and adjust audio to ensure best quality possible. 
  • Monitor live recording sessions, ensuring all participants are actively “uploading” audio as they speak, and wait until all uploads are complete before ending each recording session.

Editing:

  • Edit podcast episodes using Adobe Audition, available through SJMC’s Creative Cloud account, or student’s choice of professional audio editing software.
  • Import audio files and organize segments in the timeline according to the episode structure:
    • Intro with music
    • Guest(s) introduction
    • Guest interview
    • Outro with music overlay
  • Edit recorded portions by removing filler words ("ums," "ahs") and dead air gaps, adjusting audio levels, and refining audio transitions as needed.
  • Collaborate with Britt to ensure content quality, using personal judgment to cut less insightful or repetitive segments.
  • Manage audio gain adjustments to maintain consistent sound levels between 6-12dB.
  • Export edited show as a .wav or mp3 file.

Publishing:

  • Upload each episode to SoundCloud, ensuring it is properly linked to Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and iTunes.
  • Set episodes to private on SoundCloud initially, check "Include in RSS feed" for syndication, and schedule public release on Monday mornings at 5:00 a.m.

Qualifications:

  • Dependable and able to hit deadlines consistently.
  • Experience with Adobe Audition or other professional audio editing software.
  • Strong attention to detail and great time management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, quick to reply to emails, and ability to work both independently and in collaboration with team members.
  • Familiarity with social media and digital marketing strategies is a plus.

Compensation:

  • Over the course of this internship, you will be paid $3,000 according to university payroll schedule.
  • This rate is determined based on the following: 15-week obligation X10 hours per week X $20 per hour.
