CreateAthon@USC is part of the national CreateAthon network of professionals and students in the communication arts who dedicate their time and creative talents for social good.

CreateAthon started right here, in Columbia South Carolina. Teresa Coles and Cathy Monetti of Riggs Partners wanted to use their creative talents for charity — so they decided to dedicate 24 continuous hours to provide pro bono services to nonprofits. They called this event CreateAthon. Since 1998, CreateAthon has been a model for creative philanthropy. Since it’s national launch in 2002, CreateAthon has grown tremendously, attracting 101 agencies, professional organizations, corporate marketing departments, and universities throughout North America as partners. CreateAthon has produced more than 3,500 marketing projects, pro-bono, for nonprofits. These projects valued at more than $24 million. VCU professor Peyton Rowe extended the concept to engage colleges and universities, founding CreateAthon on Campus in 2008.

Associate Professor Karen Mallia launched CreateAthon@USC in 2013, with help from Senior Instructor Scott Farrand. Dr. Haylee Mercado of Sport and Entertainment Management joined the movement the following year.
