Genna Contino is a senior journalism major and editor-in-chief of The Daily Gamecock, the University of South Carolina’s student-run newspaper. She started writing at
the paper in fall 2017, and she worked as arts and culture editor and managing editor
before assuming the role of editor-in-chief in summer 2019.
In addition to using her writing skills at the Daily Gamecock, Contino works for Carolina News and Reporter as part of her senior semester capstone experience. She also freelances for 9 to 5 Mag, a Charleston-based magazine.
At South Carolina, Contino has loved the opportunities she has had to learn new skills
and to develop relationships with faculty.
“I’ve been able to create really strong bonds with my professors and I think that
has really influenced my future career,” Contino says.
Contino speaks Spanish and studied abroad in Cadiz, Spain in summer 2019, where she
lived with a host family and visited several other European countries. She enjoys
writing feature stories on arts and entertainment and would like to write professionally
for a magazine after she graduates.
