Irma Van Scoy is from upstate New York and taught at James Madison University in Virginia before joining the University of South Carolina's Early Childhood faculty in 1990. She served as the Associate Dean of the College of Education from 2000-2011. In Fall 2011, Van Scoy became the Executive Director of the Center for Integrative and Experiential Learning, the university’s initiative to enhance students’ education through the integration of learning within and beyond the classroom.

Under Van Scoy’s leadership the University of South Carolina received the 2014 Association for General and Liberal Studies Exemplary Program Processes Award in Co-Curricular General Education Learning. The award recognizes UofSC's success in building on general education by promoting integrative learning across within and beyond the classroom experiences (UofSC Connect).
Van Scoy has been selected and served in numerous education leadership roles including serving as an Academic Leadership Fellow, Southeastern Conference Academic Consortium; Member or the Board of Examiners, National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education; and Leadership Associate, National Network for Educational Renewal. She received the 2014 Outstanding Faculty Partner Award from the UofSC Division of Student Affairs.
