2018 Roundtable Discussion Series - Reading, Viewing, Thinking and Acting

The Center for Education and Equity of African American Students is hosting a year-long roundtable discussion series which will focus on current issues facing African American students.

A series of articles and/or videos will be sent out to interested participants in advance to encourage discussion during the roundtable. Also, the Center will host a summer book study (June-August) which will follow the same discussion format as the roundtables.

All events will be held from 4:30-6:30p.m. in Room 219 of the Child Development Research Center, 1530 Wheat Street, Columbia, SC. For additional information or copies of articles and video links contact Jennifer Reed via email at or phone at 803.777.0092.

Youth Voices: A group of high school students from Aiken and Allendale will speak about their involvement in the Next Generation Leadership Network. They will share how the network has opened their eyes to many problems in society and their local communities. The Allendale group will focus on an issue they have been passionately advocating for, related to the retention of third graders at Allendale Elementary. The Aiken group will discuss how they created an afterschool mentoring program where they served as role models to help prevent elementary students from being recruited by gangs.

African American Studies Summer Institute for School Teachers

This is a five-day, field-based experience emphasizing African American culture and prominent historic sites in three regions of South Carolina: Midlands, Upstate and Low Country. The project uses a 3-pronged instructional approach to deliver a dynamic, culturally- centered learning experience. The institute meets June 11-15, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Thirty participants will be selected from K-12 teachers and coordinators (grades K,1,2,3,4,5,8, & 11) in the three regions of the state (10 from each region)
