Elementary Education: Degree Programs

By second grade, the majority of students are adjusted to school routine, so instead of helping your students learn the basics of the classroom, you can focus on making core subjects like math, English, science and social studies exciting. Many of the methods courses in Elementary Education are offered in real-world school settings. Your experience is capped off by student teaching, where it's time to apply what you've learned!

Elementary Education, B.A.

The Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education will prepare you to teach grades 2-6 in South Carolina; please contact the Office of Student Services for specific details about certification procedures and requirements. Your course work will include three on-site internships, and many of your methods courses will take place in one of a number of real-world settings, including urban, suburban and rural schools. Elementary Education, M.A.T. (2-6 Certification)

The Master of Art in Teaching is designed to prepare you to teach grades 2-6 in South Carolina. You will need to have a bachelor’s degree to join this program, although your degree can be in any subject.

You will complete two internships: the first is a practicum with two weeks of actual teaching; the other is a “gradual release” model, where you will work alongside an experienced teacher who will gradually give you more and more control over the classroom activities. In addition to your classes and practicum, you will need to pass the Praxis Exam, which will ultimately certify you as a teacher.
