College of Engineering and Computing

Creating the Entrepreneurial Engineer

The University of South Carolina’s College of Engineering and Computing is now offering a Master of Science in Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurial Engineering, which begins this fall 2018. The brand-new program is the only graduate program in South Carolina that blends a background of engineering and science with business skills emphasizing entrepreneurship.

This one-year program between the college and the Moore School of Business gives engineering and science students the ability to determine the financial feasibility of their concepts and what kind of business model they would require for commercialization. Students will learn how to apply their technical skills to the corporate world while opening up alternative career paths.

“Students participating in the graduate program have a unique opportunity to combine STEM education with the necessary skills to take technology from the lab to commercialization,” says Ehsan Jabbarzadeh, director of entrepreneurship and associate professor of Chemical Engineering. “Our students will learn how to increase their competitiveness in the workforce by expanding upon their already developed skillset.”

Classes such as Business and Legal Issues for Science Managers, Management of Engineering Projects, and Innovation and New Venture Analysis are all part of the required course list. Students also have the option to take electives such as Health Economics, Next Energy and Information Warfare, among others that explore the entrepreneurial side of engineering and science.

Perspective students interested in this program should apply to the USC Graduate School by June 30 to secure their position in the inaugural fall class. Interested students should have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited program in science, engineering or other technology disciplines with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
