The Graduate School, in collaboration with other offices across campus, offers a variety of free personal and professional development workshops and events to help you succeed.  These events are open to all UofSC graduate students.

Founders Friday Financial Fitness: Basic Financial Education

Friday | September 3, 2021 | 3 - 4:30 p.m. | Russell House University Union 305
Money is something we deal with on a daily basis. It is important to know how to take care of it by going back to the basics. Learn from a trusted certified financial counselor about managing daily finances, the ins and outs of banking, building an emergency fund and how to properly budget.

Start Smart Salary Negotiation Workshop (Virtual)

Friday | September 10, 2021 | 12 - 2 p.m.
Prepare to hit the job market armed with the knowledge and skills to negotiate salaries and benefits and receive fair and realistic compensation. This two-hour virtual workshop facilitated by the Student Success Center is specifically designed to teach you how to negotiate salaries for a new job and will increase your confidence in your negotiation style through facilitated discussion and role-play. Maximizing Your Research Identity and Impact

Friday | September 17, 2021 | 3 - 4 p.m. | Russell House University Union 305

Join Dr. Julius Fridriksson, Interim Vice President for Research, as he discusses issues central to your research identity, such as your mentors, professional affiliations, collaborations, and publications. He will also discuss the necessity of understanding and communicating the significance of your research both within and beyond your specific academic discipline.

Learn to Talk About Your Research

Is it a struggle for you to discuss your research with friends and family who may be unfamiliar with the details of your academic discipline? This workshop is designed to help you talk about your research with a general audience.

Teaching Statement Writing Workshop (Virtual)

Friday | September 24, 2021 | 2 - 3:30 p.m.

What is your teaching philosophy?  What should you write or include?  What if you have limited teaching experience? This workshop will help you articulate your teaching philosophy in a concise, effective essay.  This is a working webinar, incorporating time for individual brainstorming and writing, group discussion, and feedback.  Participants will leave with an outline of their statement and guidance to continue crafting it.

Your financial credit report will have longer lasting effects than your GPA. We want you to know how to use credit wisely by understanding what makes up your credit score along with what you might see on your credit report. It’s also imperative to be aware of red flags associated with identity theft. Learn to protect your credit and identity with this seminar.

Professional Headshots on the Horseshoe

Friday | October 15, 2021 | 2 - 5 p.m.

Weather permitting, the Graduate School will offer free professional headshots for graduate students in the center of the courtyard in front of McKissick Museum, using the beautiful historic Horseshoe as a backdrop. Space is limited, and participants are required to register and sign up for a timeslot. Details are subject to change if there is a shift in COVID guidance.

Resume and CV Workshop

Friday | October 29, 2021 | 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Location:  Career Center, Thomas Cooper Library, Level 5, Classroom 531

The Career Center will discuss the differences between a Curriculum Vita and a resume, the types of content you should include in these documents, and how you can appropriately sell your graduate school experiences to employers.

Diversity Statement Writing Workshop (Virtual)

Friday | October 29, 2021 | 2 - 3:30 p.m.

How do you approach writing a diversity statement? This workshop will help guide you in exploring your personal experiences and help you determine what to emphasize and include in your statement. You will learn what aspects of faculty life and academia contribute to an institution’s DEI mission, and how best to illustrate your personal commitment to such DEI goals using the various facets of your own experiences.  You DO have a story to tell.  Learn how to write a Diversity Statement that stands out!

Federal Resume Prep Workshop for Graduate Students

Friday | November 5, 2021 | 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. | Russell House University Union 303

Are you interested in applying to positions in the federal government? In this workshop, the Career Center will discuss federal resume formatting and content, strategies for converting your current resume/CV to a federal resume, and getting started with USA Jobs. Registration is required and space is limited.

Beyond the basics of money management, investing and retirement planning plays a major part in taking care of your finances. You’ll learn the purpose of investing, different products associated with financial planning as well as a look into planning for retirement in this seminar.
