Notes:

This course provides an introduction to the broad field known as qualitative research. Since a field this large cannot be covered in one semester, we will examine theoretical, methodological, and practical aspects of qualitative research by focusing on the areas of naturalistic observation, interviews (individual and group), and document analysis. Students will “get their feet wet” in qualitative research by participating in some of the steps involved in the research process. Students should expect to engage in a variety of learning experiences including whole class and small group discussions, lectures, readings, and participatory/hands-on activities. Readings and class discussions will provide opportunities to reflect on assumptions students hold about how knowledge is constructed and the ways one may make meaning of the world. Coursework and discussions will require students to examine presuppositions they hold about themselves, and about their research interests, questions, and choices. The course materials focus on qualitative research broadly and will benefit students interested in engaging in qualitative research across the social sciences. By the end of the course, students will prepare a research proposal that they can submit to IRB for approval with which they can begin data collection.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
