This course explores the history of the University of South Carolina from its founding in 1801 to the current era with an emphasis on the student experience and on the issue of race. The course will discuss historical trends about the history of higher education generally, for context, but the focus will be on the history of UofSC and its place in the state, nation, and world. Additionally, this course will be a service-learning course that will give students the opportunity to work on revitalizing a historic building on campus. Required service hours may occur outside the standard meeting time for the course.
