This class will examine the fight for black voting rights in the decades leading up to the end of the South Carolina white primary, a 1947 case that began in Columbia and wound its way to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this course students will 1)study the roots of the voting rights struggle that began after the Civil War, 2) research leading civil rights figures of the 1940s, and 3) learn to navigate digital newspaper archives to paint a portrait of the times. The class will also hear from speakers who grew up in the 1940s and can provide rich context to the times. Students should become more proficient in researching digital archives and come away with a more nuanced understanding of the centuries-long quest for the ballot that remains prominent in contemporary politics. Final project will be a paper/presentation.
