**GHS non-US Hist**This course examines the dramatic changes that have taken place in Russia from the beginning of Gorbachev’s reforms, in the mid 1980s, to the present. We will discuss the factors that brought about the collapse of the Soviet Union, analyze the political, economic and social development of contemporary Russia, and the new opportunities and hardship of post-Soviet life. A primary goal of the course is to develop an understanding of the causes, nature and consequences of the transformation of the Russian state and society in this period. The course is structured around the key problems of contemporary Russian development. Putin’s personality and politics, and the current explosive situation around the Ukraine will be one of the focal points of the course. The course is designed as a series of lectures and discussions. There will be special sessions to watch documentaries on the topics discussed.
