Notes:

**Course combines classroom lecture/discussion, two field trips, and studio time where students will learn dances observed in the films.  No prior dance experience is required.** This course is designed for students who want to learn more about how dance has had an important presence on the film industry in Hollywood, USA while also learning a few dance moves. We will explore a wide range of films focusing on purpose and result using dance as a vehicle for entertainment, social discovery, as well as cultural exploration. Secondly, participants will learn about dance genres such as ballet, jazz, musical theater, social and modern idioms, including hip hop. There will be a participatory element in the course when students will be able to learn through movement exploration the corresponding dances and style within the structure seen in the films and lectures. The goal of this course is to engage with the aesthetic, philosophical, and historic significance effect dance has had in film. Seeing live performance in dance is an important aspect of understanding and learning about the art of dance and therefore there will be field trips on two occasions on the UofSC Columbia campus which will be posted in the syllabus. Grading for this course will be based on multiple choice exams, essays on specific films with detailed rubrics and final research presentations. Students need no prior experience in dance to be successful in this course.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
