My Honors College

Honors Ambassadors

The Honors Ambassador team is a diverse group of involved students who are committed to sharing their passion for the Honors College and the University of South Carolina to varied audiences. The Honors Ambassador Program prepares current students to showcase the SCHC by sharing how it has contributed to their collegiate experience. Honors Ambassadors serve as student representatives — the “face” of the Honors College. Through this experience, students will develop a skill set in public-speaking, communication, critical thinking and teamwork.

Honors Ambassadors in Action

Honors College Ambassadors assist with information sessions, admitted student panels and various recruitment events where they present to prospective students by sharing detailed information about the South Carolina Honors College and their personal experiences as Honors students.

  • Information Sessions take place throughout the year every Monday and Friday between 11:15 a.m. - 1 p.m.
  • Admitted Student Panels take place between February and April every Monday and Friday between 9:45 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.

Ambassadors represent the Honors College at recruitment events (Meet the SCHC, Open Houses, etc.) and assist with outreach efforts to prospective students and their parents.

Our Honors Ambassador team consists of approximately 16-18 members during the academic year.

Time commitments vary throughout the semester, but Ambassadors average 3-5 hours a week and are paid $10 per hour.

Ambassadors are required to attend biweekly meetings (every other Friday, from 2:30 p.m. - 4 p.m.) during the semester for ongoing training and professional development, and are required to participate in at least one weekend recruiting event per semester.

Ambassadors should be comfortable with public speaking and collaborating with others.

Additional responsibilities may include meeting with visitors, responding to inquiries from prospective students, recruiting new Honors Ambassadors, participating in weekend events for prospective/admitted students and other duties as assigned.

Summer Honors Ambassadors

In addition to the duties listed above, students hired as Summer Honors Ambassadors will also assist with Honors Orientation. This small group of students (4-6 per summer) will present at Summer Information Sessions (see above) but will also assist the Recruitment Manager with planning, organizing and presenting at Honors Orientation sessions throughout the summer. Summer Honors Ambassadors will present to both incoming first-year students and their families at each of the nine Honors Orientation sessions. They will also assist on other projects designed to create community among the incoming first-year class, including the design and creation of videos and social media content.

Position dates: May 15 – August 1, 2024*

Paid position: $12 per hour – summer rate only

Between 5 to 10 hours per week with availability for each of the nine Honors Orientation sessions in June and July listed here.

This position can be paired with other summer commitments depending on scheduling, but Information Sessions and Honors Orientation will take place in person and students hired must plan to live in Columbia for summer. Housing is not included in position.

*Summer Honors Ambassadors should meet all the eligibility criteria listed below as they will continue working for the Honors College in Fall 2024 as traditional Honors Ambassadors.

Ambassador applications for Summer/Fall 2024 will open Friday, March 1 and close on Tuesday, April 2. You can find the application here.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to attend our virtual interest meeting on Wednesday, March 13 from 4 - 4:45 p.m. via Microsoft Teams to learn more about what the position entails.

Applicants must have completed at least one semester in the Honors College prior to the application deadline and must be in good standing.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to consider applicants who are graduating in December 2024 or May 2025.

Applicants must be available on Fridays from 2:30 p.m. - 4 p.m, as all Ambassadors are expected to attend biweekly meetings for ongoing training and professional development.

When reviewing applicants, we first consider the make-up of our current Ambassador team and then seek to add new Ambassadors who complement the availability of our team as well as the majors and experiences that we have represented. Our goal is to have a well-rounded and diverse group of Ambassadors who can speak to many aspects of the student experience and the diversity that exists within the Honors College.
