South Carolina Honors College

Sonali Parmar

Ask me about…the Pre-med track, study abroad, and the best study spots on campus!

I’m a junior from Columbia, SC, and I’m a Public Health major and Spanish minor. I love both science and the humanities, so I’m grateful that the Honors College allows me to pursue both of my passions. On campus, I am part of a service sorority called Omega Phi Alpha and a healthcare organization called Timmy Global Health. I am also on the pre-med track, and I plan to head to medical school after I graduate from USC and hopefully become a dermatologist or emergency medicine physician.

I love: reading, hiking, spending time with my family, traveling, and belting out songs in my car

My advice for prospective students: When you first come into college, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or isolated. It’s ok to ask for help! Don’t hesitate to reach out to a professor, RM, or advisor.

Something that makes me laugh: Every single episode of Parks and Recreation, but especially the episodes featuring Lil Sebastian (who is five thousand candles in the wind).

My advice for current students: Don’t hesitate to change your mind or your major! College, in general, is a time to question what you believe, what you want to learn, and how you want to spend your time.

Songs I’ve completely memorized: My Shot from Hamilton. Probably the only song I could use to win a rap battle.

Favorite movie: Probably the Social Network. The witty, back-and-forth dialogue, the ambitious, backstabbing characters, and not to mention the soundtrack, which is perfect for studying (or coding the next most popular social networking website, you decide).

My favorite thing about the Honors College: Besides the free printing (!) and the amazing people I’ve met here, I love the professors at the Honors College. All the honors classes I’ve taken so far have been led by amazing professors who are knowledgeable, engaging, and most importantly, passionate about their respective fields.

In a movie about my life, the movie star who would play me would be: Obviously Kareena Kapoor. She was my favorite Bollywood actress as a child and that sentiment still holds true. For all the 90s/early 2000s Bollywood fans, you’ll know she starred in some classics (Jab We Met, 3 Idiots, and Kabhi Khushi, Kabhie Gham)

My life goal: To visit all 59 National Parks in the US (12 down, 47 to go!)

My reason for choosing the SCHC: Ultimately I realized that attending Honors College allows one to experience the best of both worlds. As someone who went to a pretty small high school, I wanted to go to a college that offered the same kind of community; I chose the Honors College because it not only provides a loving, helpful community to fall back on, but it is also nestled within a larger university that is brimming with opportunities.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
