USC, University of Aruba push forward in partnership

Officials from the University of Aruba recently traveled to the University of South Carolina to renew the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and Undergraduate Student Exchange Agreements between the two institutions.

Dr. Glenn Thode, the Rector of the University of Aruba, and Mr. John Wardlaw, Dean of the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management Studies, were hosted by USC President Harris Pastides, College of HRSM Dean Brian J. Mihalik and Dr. Robin B. DiPietro, Associate Professor and Director of the International Institute for Foodservice Research and Education.

These special guests are looking into developing future partnership options including social work, environmental science and sustainability, as well as nursing. They are also interested in learning more about the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) and Palmetto College on their visit to Columbia.

“This partnership has funded many research projects in the Caribbean and in South Carolina, as well as financially supported three Ph.D. students in the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management (HRTM) who are currently studying foodservice management,” said DiPietro.

The partnership between the two is going on its fourth year and has included faculty exchanges for research and teaching, as well as student exchanges. In addition, it has resulted in more than eight publications and presentations on mutual research in tourism, retail, and hospitality.
