SPTE 590—The Tournament Business

Tour Dates: May 10-15, 2018

Tour Leader: Dr. John Grady

Learn about the golf tournament business while attending THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Often called “the Fifth Major” in golf, we will have “behind the scenes” access to this tournament and speak with professionals from the PGA Tour. In the evening, spend time enjoying Jacksonville Beach while networking with local industry professionals.

In Charleston, learn how to work with sponsors to market professional tournaments. Find out about careers in athlete sponsorship and player representation from a golf sports agent. Tour the Volvo Cars Open tennis center and speak with the tournament manager about marketing and operations for a WTA marquee tennis event. Learn how to create unique fan experiences and plan special events from the Charleston Riverdogs. Speak with USC alumni about their career paths in this dynamic industry. This course is open to USC students from all majors. Space is limited for this tour.

Student Fees:
Tuition for SPTE 590 + $800

Fees Include:

  • Transportation from Columbia
  • 3-night hotel stay in Jacksonville
  • PLAYERS Championship tickets for 2 days
  • 2 night's hotel in Charleston’s Historic District
  • Some meals

Course Credit: This is a 3-credit hour course.

  • First payment* ($400) due November 15, 2017
  • Second payment* ($400) due February 1, 2018

SPTE 590—Baseball and the Midwest 

Tour Dates: May 13 - 27, 2018

Baseball is America’s game and the opportunity to visit Midwest venues in Denver, Colorado Springs, Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Pittsburgh is your chance to get away. Tour at least 9 facilities, attend 12 games, and much more. 

Please join us. It's time to see America and enjoy twelve  games as we tour.

Course Credit: This is a 3-credit hour course.

Student Fees:
$2,600 plus airfare to Denver, tuition and applicable fees 

Fees Include:

  • Airfare from Denver to Chicago
  • Transportation from Chicago to Pittsburgh
  • Airfare from Pittsburgh to Charlotte
  • Double occupancy hotel accommodations, and admission to games and venues

Fees Do Not Include:

  • Airfare to Denver
  • Tuition and fees for SPTE 590-002*

In addition to the tour fee, you must register for SPTE 590-002 for the Maymester 2018 semester. Please be sure to use schedule code 71229.

Fees Payment Schedule:

  • Non-refundable deposit: $1,500 is due by March 10, 2018
  • Second payment: of $1,100 is due by April 1, 2018

HRTM 590M—Theme Park and Attraction Management

Tour Dates: May 27-June 1, 2018

Experience the best of Orlando while gaining behind-the-scenes exposure to the theme park and attractions industry. Explore the multifaceted aspects of this field including history, venues, resources, ride operations, merchandising, food service and design.

Attractions include the Walt Disney World Theme Parks, Magic Kingdom “Keys to the Kingdom” behind-the-scenes tour, and Epcot Center. We will also visit Universal Studios Islands of Adventure, Seaworld and Gatorland.

Each park visit will include an educational component from tours to spending time with park management who will provide insights into the unique operation of each park.

Student Fees: $1,780 plus course tuition.

Fees Include:

  • Admission into each park
  • Lodging
  • Transportation to and from the parks
  • Backstage tours

Fees Do Not Include: Transportation to and from Orlando, food and beverage.

Course Credit: This is a 3-credit hour course.
