Why did you choose UofSC School of Law?

I chose the University of South Carolina School of Law because of the Children's Law Concentration. South Carolina offered significantly more courses in child and family law than any other school I was considering. Plus, the Children's Law Center is housed with UofSC Law and just one block away, so there is a lot of opportunity to get involved with all thing's child law right here in South Carolina! Ultimately, it's the best decision that I could have made!

What advice would you offer incoming 1L law students?

Enjoy your summer! You are about to start a very busy journey, so do not worry about "prepping" for law school by reading books about law or law school life. Trust me, this down time is something that should be cherished and spent doing what you love! So go take that trip, spend time with friends and family before you move here, and do something for you. Just enjoy your time! When you get here, we'll all be ready to help you make the transition!

What student organization or activities are you involved in?

I am President of the Children's Advocacy Law Society, Vice President of Women in Law, and Captain for the UofSC School of Law Dance Marathon team! I'm also a member of Christian Legal Society, Diversity & Inclusion Task Force, and Student Animal League Defense Fund.

Favorite thing about living in Columbia?

My favorite part of living in Columbia is always having something to do. Whether you stay in Columbia or venture to another part of South Carolina, there's always a new state park to discover, a restaurant to enjoy, or a place to go have some fun. Some of my favorite things to do in Columbia are visit the Riverbanks Zoo, eat and have a marg at Cantina 76, and walk around the Statehouse Grounds!

Why did you choose UofSC School of Law?

I chose USC because of the focus on serving others in our local community. I wanted to be a part of a community that felt welcoming to me and was welcoming to others! The alumni also really make you feel connected to the legal community in SC.

Any tips for someone applying to law school/ considering where they should attend?

Don’t rule out any schools until you visit! USC wasn’t my top choice until I toured and met students and professors!

What advice would you offer incoming 1L law students?

Stay focused on yourself! Don’t let others make you feel like you’re not smart enough or good enough to be here!

What was your pathway to getting to law school?

I had always wanted to go to law school, but it wasn’t until my Philosophy professor in college encouraged me to apply that I thought about it seriously. I took a year between graduating and coming to law school and worked a full-time job.

Why did you choose UofSC School of Law?

I chose UofSC School of Law because of the gut feeling I had when I attended an open house. I loved the location, the atmosphere, and the positive attitudes of the current students.  Everyone is kind and always willing to help.

Any tips for someone applying to law school/ considering where they should attend?

Focus on where you see yourself and what is important to you. Law school is a big endeavor, so make sure you're comfortable and happy.

Favorite thing about attending University of South Carolina School of Law?

The faculty. They can always point me in the right direction and go out of their way to make me feel welcome.

Fun fact about yourself?

I am a first-generation college and law school student.

Why did you choose UofSC School of Law?

I chose UofSC School of Law because Columbia reminded me of your typical Southern college town. You will have plenty of free time so choose a school where you can imagine yourself exploring the surrounding city. Also, it says a lot about the school when you watch how the students and faculty interact with one another. UofSC stuck out to me because of the great relationships I noticed while visiting on campus.

What advice would you offer incoming 1L law students?

My advice to incoming 1L law students is to keep an open mind with the first round of classes because you will be surprised at which ones you enjoy. You may have an idea of what area you want to practice in but don't be afraid to take new classes and explore your options.

What student organization or activities are you involved in?

I am a member of the Student Bar Association and participated in the Volunteer Income Tax Association clinic for the first time my 2L year. I highly recommend holding off on joining organizations until you find something you truly enjoy. It is easy to get overwhelmed, so focus your time on activities that really pertain to your interests

Any tips for someone applying to law school/ considering where they should attend?

If you know where you want to practice law after law school, you should either go to law school in that area or find a school with great connections in that area. This will help with finding jobs and summer internships.

What advice would you offer incoming 1L law students?

Make sure to find time for yourself. The first year of law school is definitely an adjustment, however even with how stressful it can be, just remember that it is okay to take a break sometimes.

Favorite thing about attending University of South Carolina School of Law?

Everyone here from the professors, to the staff, to the students all want to help you succeed. Your fellow classmates will challenge you and support you throughout your time here.

Why did you choose UofSC School of Law?

Ultimately, UofSC Law just felt like home. I was born and raised in South Carolina, and I even went to college in the state. The admissions team and community at UofSC Law were so welcoming and really made me feel like they wanted me here and that I belonged. That is a feeling you won’t get anywhere else!

Any tips for someone applying to law school/ considering where they should attend?

Do not stress out too much. I am a firm believer that you will end up where you are supposed to be. No one knows you better than you know yourself. Take that into consideration, and you will find you way!

What advice would you offer incoming 1L law students?

1L year is even tougher than they say it is. The most important thing, in my opinion, is to make sure you are taking care of your physical and mental health. Law school gets overwhelming and consumes your life easily- carve out some time for yourself. That might be exercising daily, a Netflix show, or maybe dinner with friends.

What student organizations or activities are you involved in?

Aside from serving as an Admissions Ambassador, I am also a member of the ABA Real Property, Trust & Estate Law Journal. Outside of class, I work at the SC State House as a law clerk.

Area of Legal Interest: Health and Real Property Law

Any tips for someone applying to law school/ considering where they should attend?

Make sure you visit the schools you are considering attending. You'd be amazed the benefit of touring the school. I'd say it's very important to make sure you like the school and city/town where you plan to spend at least the next three years of your life.

What advice would you offer incoming 1L law students?

Don't compare yourself to others. You're all new to this and some will adjust to law school quicker than others, and that's okay. You just have to follow your path, continue to push through, put in the work, and it will all work itself out.

Favorite thing about attending University of South Carolina School of Law?

The support that is found throughout the school! There are people at all levels, from admin, to professors, to fellow students, that make it clear that they want to see you succeed and are happy to help you do so. I know there are plenty of schools that say they aren't competitive, but I can say that is not a lie when it comes to UofSC Law, because I have experienced the support continuously throughout my first year here.

Favorite thing about living in Columbia?

I just got a puppy in early 2021 so I love taking her for walks at the Riverwalk on the weekends!

What advice would you offer incoming 1L law students?

You learn a ton in law school, but make sure to take advantage of the social opportunities as well. Law school is a great time to make connections with people who will be your future colleagues.

Favorite thing about attending University of South Carolina School of Law?

The teachers, staff, and students at UofSC Law are all incredible. They challenge you to become a better student and support you every step of the way. Everyone is very kind and genuinely wants you to succeed!

Any tips for someone applying to law school/ considering where they should attend?

When considering law school, talk with current students as much as possible to get different perspectives. Current students and alumni can be your best asset during the process!

What advice would you offer incoming 1L law students?

Keep an open mind your 1L year. You can overlook interesting opportunities if you are too set on the path you plan to take in law school.

Favorite thing about attending University of South Carolina School of Law?

The people! You spend a lot of time around the same people during law school; luckily, UofSC Law has some of the best students, faculty, and staff possible.

Why did you choose UofSC School of Law?

The people. It may sound like a cliché but the community at UofSC Law is truly one of a kind. Whether it be the professors who go out of their way to help you adjust, the faculty who make the transition as easy as possible or your peers who are an amazing support system throughout it all - there is no other family that holds you up better than UofSC Law. The support is not just for the three short years while on campus, it goes well beyond. I have had fellow UofSC Law alum reach out a lending hand to myself while I was applying to Law School, once admitted, and well into my first year. This community looks out for and cares for one another, it is more than just a group of people in law school but rather a family for life.

What advice would you offer incoming 1L law students?

Be open minded! Whether it be with conversations in class, meeting new people or trying new activities in a new town; law school is the time to do it all. I truly believe 1L year is one of the most transformative years of your life and with that comes the opportunity to grow as an individual. Be open minded and say yes when you can (or when law school course load permits)!

What was your pathway to getting to law school?

I was very active in politics and political campaigns growing up and joined my high school's law center where I spent half of the school day for two years studying law and policy. My senior year of high school I worked on my local solicitor's campaign and that is when I decided I wanted to go to law school and become a prosecutor. I spent my 1L summer clerking for that same solicitor who inspired me to go to law school! During college I worked for the South Carolina Senate and spent a Summer in Washington D.C. working for the United States Senate and then attended law school right after I graduated.

Favorite thing about attending University of South Carolina School of Law?

One of my favorite things about being an ambassador is meeting incoming students from all walks of life and backgrounds and hearing how and why they decided to attend law school. Each student brings their own experiences and backgrounds to law school. It truly makes the entire law school community better when we learn and grow from one another!

What advice would you offer incoming 1L law students?

Law school is challenging, but you are more than capable. When things get tough, remind yourself that you belong here, you would not have been admitted if you couldn't handle the task. Never be afraid to ask for help!

Favorite thing about attending University of South Carolina School of Law?

My favorite thing about attending UofSC School of Law is the people. Everyone here is so welcoming and supportive.

What student organizations or activities are you involved in?

I am a member of the Student Division of the SC Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Law Students of Color Collective, and serve as the Community Service Director for the Black Law Students Association.

Any tips for someone applying to law school/ considering where they should attend?

I relied on a few standard requirements that I had including attending a law school in the Southeast, strong alumni, bar passage rate, tutoring services, a mentor program, and the school’s response to COVID. USC Law exceeded my expectations and any question I had was readily answered by the admissions office.

What advice would you offer incoming 1L law students?

The life of an incoming 1L law student is chaotic at the minimum. Most students are experiencing a learning curve and reading denser material than they typically do. The best advice I can give to an incoming 1L student is to stay ahead of your readings and outlining.

What was your pathway to getting to law school?

I worked as a paralegal for two years before attending law school.

Favorite thing about attending University of South Carolina School of Law?

I believe the professors are the best aspect of USC Law. The professors that I have encountered at USC Law have been nothing less than helpful, friendly, and useful resources. I know that I can always go to my professors with questions or for advice.

Why did you choose UofSC School of Law?

I attended an admitted student’s day and talked to a student ambassador who told me about how the law school is a giant community, among the students, with the faculty, and even as far as the alumni. I was looking for a school where everyone supported each other instead of a place where everyone was cutthroat with each other and as I walked through the school that day, talked to different students and faculty, and sat in on a class I definitely saw the community that the ambassador told me about! I also was looking for a school where I could explore many different areas of law and the faculty and class offerings here give me that opportunity!

What advice would you offer incoming 1L law students?

Enjoy your summer and relax! I know it is tempting to want to get ahead the summer before you start law school, but I would highly recommend not doing that. You will just end up being confused if you learn about one of the topics in a different way than the professor teaches it to you while in law school. The first year of law school will be tough enough, you don’t need to add stress to yourself before you even start!

Favorite thing about living in Columbia?

I love that Columbia is a small city, so I can enjoy the benefits of a city but also have space to myself, it has the best of both worlds! Columbia is the perfect sized city for me, after living here for over a year now there are still so many restaurants I haven’t tried yet, there are a bunch of different activities happening each week, and I never feel cramped when walking around downtown. When I need a break, I go to one of the many river walks that we have nearby with my dog and during that time I completely forget that I am in a city because I am surrounded by nature!

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
