8th Annual Southern Clinical Conference with the 11th Annual Bellow Scholars Workshop

We invite you and your colleagues to attend the 8th Annual Southern Clinical Conference and 11th Annual Bellow Scholars Workshop at the University of South Carolina School of Law on October 19–20, 2018 in Columbia, South Carolina. The theme for this year’s Southern Clinical Conference is “Overcoming Divisions”.

Registration/check-in and organized group dinners begin Thursday evening, October 18th. The plenaries, panels, and works in progress kick off early morning on Friday, October 19th and will end mid-day, Saturday October 20th. There will be a New Clinicians portion starting on Thursday afternoon and will conclude on Saturday afternoon immediately after the closing plenary. The Bellow workshop will be held on the afternoon of Friday, October 19th and will conclude the morning of Saturday, October 20th.

Clinical legal education lives at the intersection of powerful divisions in American life. These divisions include those associated with social justice movements, including race, class, gender, gender identity, nationality, and many others. Clinical educators also occupy other “between” spaces: theory and practice; the academy and the bar; those with and without access to lawyers; private, public service, and public interest practices; adversarial, collaborative, and communitarian modes of influence; and of course, experiential and other teaching methods.

This year’s Southern Clinical Conference explores the many ways through which our work engages us and our students in addressing these divides. Which divisions should our practices and our courses address? How can lawyers and law either sharpen or overcome these divides? Through what tools of practice and of pedagogy can we teach our students about their roles in addressing new and long-standing injustices?

Please join us for plenary, concurrent, and works-in-progress sessions that focus on the important social justice missions of law school clinical and externship programs. The Conference provides great opportunities to engage in vibrant discussions, network with like-minded colleagues, discover new and exciting collaborative possibilities, and take home valuable new information that will improve your work and service as an experiential educator.
