Biography

I have been involved in medical education within university settings since the beginning of my medical career. In 1982, at the beginning of my fourth year of medical school at the University of Santiago de Compostela, I joined the Ibero-American Institute of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Nutrition under the direction of Prof. Jose Cabezas-Cerrato. During three years, I received training in the fields of neuroendocrinology and diabetes neuropathy on humans subjects. After finishing medical school, I had a fourth-year training period in neuroendocrinology to obtain my Ph.D. degree. I worked with Prof. FF Casanueva in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and Dr. Luciano Martini in Milan, Italy, during this period.

After finishing my clinical training in Barcelona and Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and London, England, I spent two years as a post-doctoral research associate at the Department of Cell Biology and Biochemistry of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) in Lubbock, Texas. Under the direction of Prof. Reid L Norman, I received training in basic and translational research in the rhesus monkey. In 2000 I joined the endocrinology fellowship at the University of Chicago Hospitals, where I have the opportunity to work under the supervision of Prof. Samuel Refetoff, Roy E Weiss, and Lesley DeGroot, all world leaders in the thyroid field. In the laboratory of Prof. S Refetoff, I continued my research training in human genetics.

In 2003 I was appointed as Tenured Associate Professor at the Department of Internal Medicine of the University of Santiago de Compostela. I started the Thyroid and Metabolic Unit, a clinical and research facility dedicated to the study of thyroid diseases and lipodystrophies. During my tenure at the University of Santiago de Compostela, I directed RIAIDT, a multi-campus research facility network. I was appointed Clinical Vice-dean to coordinate the clerkship rotation of 900 medical students within the SERGAS –the Autonomous Community of Galicia healthcare systems. From 2009 to 2018, I was a Professor of Medicine and chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the Department of Internal Medicine of TTUHSC-SOM.

From 2018 to 2020, I was a Professor of Medicine at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City, MO. Since April 2019, I hold a permanent tenured position as Full Professor of Medicine at the Department of Psychiatry, Radiology, Public Health, Nursing, and Medicine at the University of Santiago de Compostela School of Medicine, in Spain. In January 2021, I joined the University of South Carolina School of Medicine as a Tenured Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at Prisma Health-Midlands, to continue my clinical and academic trajectory.
