Session 1 (10-11:30 a.m.) - Signing with Children Aged Birth-3 and Beyond

This is a fun, interactive introduction to sign language workshop. It covers 30+ single ASL signs, the manual alphabet, and numbers 1-10. Participants will learn and practice the signs and learn how to introduce signs to young children. It also covers how sign language encourages speech and language development and can enhance overall communication.

Participants will learn:  

  1. Identify and demonstrate 30+ early signs
  2. Demonstrate the letters of the manual alphabet and numbers 1-10
  3. Explain the benefits of signing with young children 

Target Audience:

  1. Parents of young children with speech and language delays and/or disorders
  2. Professionals who work with young children with speech and language delays and/or disorders

 

Session 2 (1:30-3 p.m.)

This is a fun, interactive training for parents and professionals who want to learn emergency American Sign Language (ASL) signs to use in the workplace. It covers 50+ single ASL emergency signs, for the workplace. It also covers best practices for communicating with employees who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Participants will learn: 

  1. Participants will demonstrate and show fifty emergency American Sign Language signs to use in the workplace.
  2. Participants will identify 10 tips for communicating with an employee who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
  3. Participants will identify 5+ tips for communicating in a group or meeting with an employee who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Target Audience:

  1. Parents of transition-age students (13+) who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or have speech and language delays and use sign language to communicate
  2. Professionals who work with employees who are using sign-language to communicate

About the Presenters

Jill Eversmann photo

Jill Eversmann, MS, CCC-SLP (morning session)

Jill is a pediatric speech-language pathologist with over 35 years of experience. She is a Senior Lecturer in the Speech-Language Pathology program at Columbia College in South Carolina. In addition to teaching, she presents sign language workshops and continuing education seminars nationwide, sharing her experience with professionals and families alike. She is the founder and executive director of Koala Camp, a 6-day mini-camp for toddlers with disabilities and their parents/caregivers, to teach some early ASL signs while giving undergraduate SLP students an experiential learning opportunity. Jill earned her B.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from James Madison University (VA) and her M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from Towson University (MD). Rachell Johnson photo

Rachell Johnson, MCD, CCC-SLP, ATP (afternoon session)

Rachell has 20 years of experience in speech-language pathology and has been working with assistive technology since 2011.  She is a RESNA certified assistive technology professional. Rachell is an ASHA certified SLP and a recipient of ASHA’s ACE award.  She is the program manager for the SC Assistive Technology Program (SCATP). Rachell has served as an AT Consultant for persons of all ages in Minnesota and previously served as the Assistive Technology Program Manager for the DC Maryland and Virginia Chapter of the ALS Association helping to open one of the nation's first free standing AT clinics for those with ALS.  Rachell enjoys presenting at state and national level conferences. She has 3 journal publications and has presented at 8 national AT conferences.  Rachell has been using sign-language since childhood and has previously taught sign-language classes.
