About the Program

Target Audience: Special education teachers, general education teachers, coordinators, paraprofessionals

This presentation introduces the fundamentals of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to support students with limited communication skills. It will provide practical, research based strategies for implementing low and high-tech AAC systems in educational settings.

Participants will learn:

  1. Learn skills to teach students how to use AAC effectively for communication.
  2. Understand key components for selecting and teaching AAC vocabulary tailored to student needs.
  3. Identify techniques to support AAC implementation for students with challenging behaviors.

About the Presenters

Sharon Walters photo

Sharon M. Walters, M.A. CCC-SLP, Ph.D.

Sharon holds a Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Tennessee and a Doctorate in Special Education from Clemson University. With over 30 years as a speech-language pathologist, her experience includes experiences as an assistive technology specialist and as a behavior specialist for students on the autism spectrum.
