Our child and adolescent psychiatry partnership supports child and adolescent and general psychiatry residencies, forensic and geriatric psychiatry fellowships and training programs for other mental health professions. 

Our dentistry program is structured to provide training in the management of medically, physically and mentally compromised patients in a hospital environment. In addition to training in general dentistry, residents participate in rotations in anesthesia, emergency medicine and family medicine.

Our emergency medicine program offers a fully accredited, three-year training program with 10 residents accepted into each class. Residents are selected through ERAS and, historically, come from a wide range of locations across the United States.

Residents are supervised by 24 ABEM board-certified attending physicians who average 15 years of clinical experience after residency and expertise in a wide range of areas relative to the practice of emergency medicine, including ultrasound, EMS, toxicology, wilderness medicine, simulation medicine, pediatrics, information technology, HBO, hospital administration and global health.

Since 1977, the family medicine residency program at Prisma Health Columbia has taken pride in training more than 300 successful family physicians for South Carolina and the nation.

Our graduates practice in all types of settings: the office, the hospital, the home, the classroom, in long-term care facilities and on the athletic field. Our strong history provides an excellent foundation for preparing you for modern practice.

We are fully committed to training the family physicians in the Model of Care outlined in the Future of Family Medicine Report.

The general psychiatry residency program of Prisma Health and the Department of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Science at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine is the outgrowth of a unique partnership between academic and public psychiatry. This partnership supports general and child and adolescent psychiatry residencies as well as fellowships in forensic and geriatric psychiatry.

The program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The training emphasizes a multi-disciplinary approach to mental health services, community liaison and public service, while simultaneously promoting academic excellence and research.

The integrated plastic surgery residency program only accepts one resident into each year of training to provide the greatest possible individual attention to the growth and development of the knowledge base and technical skills of the surgeon. Developing the skills for critical thinking and lifelong learning are important aspects of the training and will be strongly emphasized.

Our internal medicine training program stresses progressive responsibility and resident decision making. This is done by allowing resident autonomy with supervision by a dedicated teaching faculty that is appropriate to the level of training. We also stress learning by teaching and we have USC medical students functioning alongside our residents. 

Neurology residents have the opportunity to work at the first Stroke Center in the Midlands, a multidisciplinary program at Prisma Health Richland that provides life-saving care using state-of-the-art technology and the latest advancements in stroke diagnosis and treatment.

Our OB-GYN residency provides formal instruction, appropriate supervision, increasing responsibility and critical evaluation in leading you to the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed by a successful obstetrician/gynecologist.

The majority of our graduates have entered private practice. However, as interest in post-residency fellowship training increases, our residents have proven themselves to be competitive in obtaining and completing these fellowships.

For more than two decades, the ophthalmology residency has been recognized as one of the top programs in the Southeast. Our graduates have considerable surgical experience and are exposed to a broad range of pathological conditions.

Prisma Health and the Prisma Health Columbia Orthopedic Center are proud to offer two fully accredited five-year orthopedic residency program positions in Columbia, South Carolina.

We currently accept two resident applicants per year into our program by participating in the match administered by the NRMP. 

The pediatrics residency program’s focus is on primary care and is directed by academic generalists, augmented by subspecialists and based on comprehensive continuity care as the best model for learning and delivering health care. The pediatric clinic has approximately 16,000 visits each year.

The Prisma Health Columbia preventive medicine residency is a two-year program in general preventive medicine and public health. The curriculum combines clinical and academic training with practicum experiences in a variety of public health and preventive medicine settings.

During their training, residents develop skills in clinical preventive medicine as well as epidemiology, public health practice, research, quality improvement, program evaluation and health policy.  

The goal of the primary care internal medicine residency program is to not only train excellent primary care physicians, but to train future leaders in primary care and in health care delivery in general. You will be exposed to training in population health, quality improvement, multidisciplinary and team based care models, collaborative care models between primary care and mental health providers and the importance of community based interventions in improving patient health outcomes.  

Our surgical training program at Prisma Health and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine provides an exceptional medical education program. We provide in-depth, hands-on clinical opportunities that provide a consistent, real-world experience, helping to improve learning and retention.

Because we understand the important role we play in training future surgeons, our expertly-trained faculty builds a trusting relationship with residents to ensure their success as competent, compassionate clinicians. Our individualized approach to training enables each doctor-in-training to excel and fulfill his/her greatest potential as physicians and surgeons.

Cardiology fellowship training will take place jointly on the Prisma Health Midlands campus and the Dorn VA Medical Center. We have selected a dedicated group of diverse key clinical faculty who are fully committed to providing fellows with the very best educational experience possible. They come from both academic and clinical backgrounds. We have methodically developed a comprehensive core curriculum that will prepare our fellows both clinically and academically.

The mission of the Department of Emergency Medicine EMS fellowship is to develop highly motivated emergency medicine physicians into educators and leaders in the field of pre-hospital medicine and medical direction. The program allows fellows to train with core faculty who are nationally recognized leaders in EMS and have years of experience in medical direction of both ground and air medical programs. The EMS fellow will be an integral component in the pre-hospital setting from both a ground and air standpoint.

Most of the clinical instruction for the endocrinology fellowship is done at Prisma Health Midlands and the Dorn VA Medical Center, which both provide state-of-the-art facilities that serve diverse medical and surgical specialties. Four, full-time faculty members who supervise a large referral practice instruct fellows. The majority of clinical instruction occurs in the outpatient setting, reflecting the major venue of health care delivery within the endocrine subspecialty.

The University of South Carolina Department of Family and Preventive Medicine created a family medicine – global health fellowship to help address the following areas:

• Practice of medicine in resource-poor settings
• Public Health
• Project management
• Teaching and Leadership

The one-year course of study in forensic psychiatry focuses on the interface of psychiatry and the legal system. The forensic psychiatry fellowship program offers excellent training in pre-trial and post-trial criminal litigation, civil litigation and extensive experience in civil and criminal court testimony.

During the program, each fellow will complete rotations in:

• a state forensic evaluation service.
• a private-practice model civil forensic clinic.
• the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

The didactic curriculum is presented by our board-certified forensic psychiatrist, forensic psychologist and attorneys.    

Our geriatric psychiatry fellowship offers a comprehensive and varied range of clinical training and systems-based learning opportunities to physicians who have completed an accredited four-year residency in psychiatry and are interested in pursuing specialty training in the mental health treatment of older adults.

Fellows receive training and supervision from board-certified and fellowship-trained geriatric psychiatrists in a variety of clinical settings, including acute in-patient care, long-term institutional care, community-based care and research.

Our geriatrics fellowship program features outstanding clinical opportunities for training, including one of the original PACE (Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) sites in the country. Our faculty have trained and served on leading geriatrics programs across the United States, we have a new state-of-the-art outpatient facility and we offer increased access to the Geriatric Loan Forgiveness Program for eligible fellows.

Our ACGME accredited Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program provides comprehensive subspecialty training for graduates of internal medicine, family medicine, emergency medicine, psychiatry, neurology, gynecology, surgical specialties or pediatrics. 

Our infectious deseases fellowship training is two years in duration. Training encompasses both clinical and research aspects of infectious disease, including hospital epidemiology, infection control and public health. Our program is committed to developing the effective teaching skills needed to become an outstanding clinical educator. Trainees joining our program will care for a diverse population of patients at the Prisma Health Columbia Hospital, the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center and our combined Infectious Disease/HIV ambulatory clinic.

Depending on the individual's preference, we provide the opportunity to gain additional experience in:

• pediatric infectious disease
• public health
• antimicrobial stewardship
• private practice infectious disease
• transplant infectious disease
• international training

The primary clinical site for the pulmonary & critical care fellowship program is Prisma Health Midlands, a 650-bed tertiary referral medical center. At Prisma Health Richland, fellows are trained in the care of patients who are critically ill and those who have pulmonary disease. PHR is also the site of our outpatient clinic, which cares for both general pulmonary and subspecialty patients. The fellows’ continuity clinic takes place here.

One of only a handful of such programs in the nation, this simulation fellowship offers a motivated individual the opportunity to have dedicated learning and practice in the various techniques employed in simulation-based education. Our highly-trained team and our extensive complement of simulation technologies serve all staff of Prisma Health Midlands, Prisma Health Baptist and Prisma Health Baptist Parkridge, as well as many pre-hospital and hospital-based providers outside of the Prisma Health system.

Sports medicine fellows will function as team physicians at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. This program is affiliated with the University of South Carolina (USC), which hosts a Division I FBS intercollegiate athletic program. Ten women's and nine men's intercollegiate varsity athletic sports from USC compete in the Southeastern Conference. The availability of this fellowship in family medicine residency provides a unique sports medicine medical experience for residents and medical students. Fellows are involved in the teaching of sports medicine through seminars, conferences, attending responsibilities and research/scholarly activities.

The accredited one-year program accepts one surgical critical care fellow each academic year. All applicants should be board eligible in general surgery or have completed three years of general surgery training and have a letter from their program director providing assurance that the fellow may return to general surgery training following completion of the critical care fellowship.

The mission of the primary care ultrasound fellowship is to develop physicians in the specialties of internal medicine, family medicine and pediatrics who have the expertise to use ultrasound at the point-of-care in outpatient and inpatient settings, who can conduct research in ultrasound applications in primary care and can educate medical students, residents and practicing physicians.

Fellows will spend approximately 20% of their time practicing their specialty within their respective department and 80% of their time in clinical training in the use of ultrasound, teaching in the medical student and residency ultrasound curricula and scholarly activity related to ultrasound research and publications.

Working closely with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, the curriculum provides fellows with opportunities to learn from practicing clinicians and educators in vascular, abdominal, emergency medicine, lung, obstetrics, gynecology and musculoskeletal ultrasound, echocardiography and ultrasound-guided procedures.

In vascular neurology fellowship the objective of training is to give residents an organized, comprehensive, supervised, full-time educational experience in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular diseases. This experience includes the management of patients with cerebrovascular disease and the integration of endovascular and neurosurgical therapy into the clinical management of patients.
