Faculty Affairs and Development

The Office for Faculty Affairs and Development (OFAD) offers educational (including continuing medical education) and professional development opportunities for clinical and biomedical science faculty at the School of Medicine Greenville and our partner Prisma Health-Upstate. Some offerings are also available for staff and students.

OFAD programming includes leadership development, teaching skills development, research and scholarship support, mentoring and coaching opportunities, networking, faculty awards, and promotion support.

Dreskin

Distinguished Lecture Series

The Distinguished Lecture Series is comprised of three endowed annual lectureships: the Dr. E Arthur Dreskin Distinguished Endowed Lecture Series, the David A. Wilson, MD Innovations in Medicine Distinguished Lecture Series, and the Ruth Wilson Nicholson Women's Health Endowed Lecture Series. National and international experts and thought leaders present cutting edge scientific knowledge and discoveries to our faculty, students, and the community.

Emerging Leaders Physician Programs

Emerging Physician Leaders Development Certificate Program

This program provides leadership development for SOMG faculty/Prisma Health physicians. Physicians learn to be more self-reflective as leaders, more effective in leading their teams, and more effective in accomplishing their leadership goals within Prisma Health. A cohort of physicians is nominated for this ten-month program. This program has been exceptionally well received by our participating physicians.

Sex and Gender Curricular Assessment and Revision (SG-CAR) (NIH R25)

SOMG, in partnership with Prisma Health-Upstate has been awarded the R25 Galvanizing Health Equity Through Novel and Diverse Educational Resources (GENDER) Research Education Grant by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The SOMG project is Sex and Gender Curricular Assessment and Revision (SG-CAR). It is both a faculty development project and a curricular revision project. SG-CAR includes faculty workshops to enable faculty to assess and revise their teaching materials for sex and gender content, validation of a faculty development toolkit for national distribution, and assessment and revision of our Lifestyle Medical Education (LMEd) curriculum for sex and gender content. LMEd is used globally. Faculty who would like a sex and gender faculty development workshop for their own departments should contact us.

Ongoing Faculty Development Programming

OFAD hosts esteemed subject matter experts quarterly to conduct workshops and seminars on various faculty development topics related to teaching, scholarship, mentoring, and skill building. Our biomedical science department also hosts a wide range of faculty development offerings which are open to all faculty. Additional faculty and professional development programming is available through the USC campus in Columbia.

RTPforME

Reflective Teaching Practices for Medical Educators (RTPforME)

RTPforME is a virtual six-week program for biomedical and clinical science faculty to build their teaching and curriculum development skills. It is offered by the Center for Teaching Excellence at the University of South Carolina in Columbia for medical school faculty in Greenville and Columbia. It is typically offered in May and June, with applications due at the end of March. OFAD participates in teaching this program, mentoring faculty, and advising on the program's curriculum. Schmidt Conference

William Schmidt Faculty Development Conference

The William Schmidt Faculty Development Conference is an annual event which provides a platform for healthcare educators to collaborate, learn, and improve their teaching skills. This half-day conference is hosted by Prisma Health and is supported by OFAD. It includes a panel where SOMG/Prisma faculty can present their works in progress.

Faculty Development

Academy of Educators (AoE)

The AoE was founded in January 2024. Its purpose is to honor, support, and enhance our faculty in their teaching, mentoring, and scholarly activities. We aim to: create a culture that values medical educators, promotes and develops educational opportunities for faculty, rewards and supports our faculty in many ways including mentoring, and facilitates excellence and innovation in teaching and learning. Inaugural committees include: programs, membership, and engagement, and will later include a mentorship committee. For more information, please contact Katherine Hix at HIXK@greenvillemed.sc.edu.

Faculty Development Committee

The Faculty Development Committee is charged with advising the Dean and the Associate Dean for Clinical Faculty Affairs and Development on faculty development offerings and strategic direction across the full range of faculty development activities related to teaching, research, scholarship and service. The committee includes representatives from the clinical and biomedical sciences.

Group on Women in Medicine and Science

Group on Women in Medicine and Science (GWIMS)

GWIMS was reincarnated in May 2023 to provide social, networking, and professional development opportunities for faculty. Quarterly networking sessions are hosted by faculty members for women faculty. Other GWIMS professional development programming is open to residents and fellows of all genders.
