Title: Assistant Director / Spark
School of Music
Phone: 803-777-4006
Office: Room 125

Currently serving as the Assistant Director of Spark: Carolina’s Music Leadership Laboratory, Jeff Vaughn assists students in identifying and developing new opportunities which are meaningful to the self, the profession, and the community.

Jeff has been focused on working with faculty, staff, and students to support integrative student experiences that leverage campus and community resources since joining the School of Music ecosystem as a graduate assistant in 2013. Now, as a member of Spark’s Core Creative Team, Jeff helps plan and coordinate event design, program development, and special initiatives for Carolina’s Music Leadership Laboratory. Other responsibilities include administrating the Spark program, supervising the USC Gig Office, managing music wellness activities and maintaining the Spark Technology Lending Library.

Jeff is often described as a creative tinkerer and frequently delves into unique projects involving the design, restoration, and fabrication of his own instruments and sound sources. His love for sound began when discovering percussion in elementary school. Whether it’s clay pots, pipes, planks, buckets, or “hacked” children’s toys - chances are that Jeff can find a way to use it for sharing a musical experience. As a member of “South Carolina’s favorite flute and percussion duo” flusSion, Jeff can often be found serving as a musical ambassador for retirement communities, schools and public arts interactions throughout the region.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Jeff relocated to South Carolina in 2013 from Los Angeles following two amazing cross-country road trips with his wife, Lauren. Aside from interesting sounds, creative endeavors, and long journeys, Jeff has a special space in his heart for working with his dog, Remo. As Spark’s three-legged wellness ambassador, Remo regularly checks in with his School of Music pack each Wednesday afternoon throughout the semester. He can often be found greeting students, licking guest artists, and wagging for community members throughout the building - accepting all banana chips offered in his direction.

Jeff holds an M.M. in Percussion Performance from The Ohio State University (‘11), a B.M. in Music Education from Slippery Rock University (’09), and is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of South Carolina.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
