Congratulations to Emily Shull who completed her PhD in July! Her dissertation examined the influence of sport participation on physical activity in youth. She accepted a position working in the Clinical Research Department at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Greenville as a Clinical Research Coordinator. As a Clinical Research Coordinator, she is a specialized independent researcher who ensures oversight and compliance of both system-wide and local Shriners Hospitals for Children clinical research activities. She works closely with the pediatric orthopedic surgeons and research leadership on a variety of research projects focused on bettering health outcomes in the pediatric population including patients with conditions such as cerebral palsy, pediatric spinal cord injuries, orthopedics and sports injury and fractures. During her time in CPARG, she worked as a graduate research assistant on a wide variety of projects investigating the influence of physical activity in children, spanning from infancy to adolescents. The research projects she worked on included but were not limited to: TRACK, FITNESGRAM, LAUNCH, EASY and CHEER. Emily says, “During my time in CPARG and under Dr. Pate’s guidance, I gained exposure to high-quality research at all stages, from grant development to data collection, to manuscript development. This provided me with invaluable research experience and tools that I am now applying in the clinical setting to continue to focus on the advancement of research and better health outcomes among the pediatric population. I feel very fortunate that I was able to be a part of the CPARG team among such a wonderful group of skilled and experienced researchers. I will always think fondly with appreciation of all that I learned from CPARG.”
