It's uncommon, but winter months occasionally bring freezing rain, snow and ice to the Columbia area, so it’s important for students to be prepared and stay informed. Keep these basic tips in mind in case of winter weather:
- Monitor local news media for weather reports and emergency information
- Look to the university website's student gateway, for class cancellations or university closings, as well as updates on what's open on campus
- Register for Carolina Alert or update your contact information at my.sc.edu/emergency and follow @CarolinaAlert on Twitter for weather-related and other emergency notifications
- Charge your cell phone ahead of time
- Stay inside if possible
- If you go outside:
- Use extreme caution when walking outside or driving
- Stay clear of dropped or sagging power lines
- Avoid areas with many trees — snow or ice may cause tree limbs to fall
- If you must travel:
- Travel during the day
- Stay on main roads — avoid back-road shortcuts
- Carry emergency supplies or kits
- Dress warmly to prevent frostbite or hypothermia
- The SC Emergency Management Division recommends keeping the following items on hand:
- Flashlights and extra batteries
- AM/FM radio
- Extra food (non-perishable/high-energy foods and snacks) and water
- Extra medication, if needed
- Basic First-Aid supplies
- Blankets, sleeping bags and extra clothing for warmth.
