The city of Columbia has adopted a new ordinance to better regulate rental property. Beginning July 1, landlords will be issued permits that can be revoked for both the condition of property or the behavior of tenants. More information about the ordinance can be found at the Code Enforcement website.
As a renter, you should inspect your property using this checklist to be sure it meets minimum city standards. If your property does not meet these standards, provide written notice to your landlord and report it to Code Enforcement at 803-545-3430.
Under the new law, your actions and the actions of your roommates and your guests can also affect your ability to continue to live in the rental unit.
