Student magazine wins six local advertising awards

Student designers from Garnet & Black magazine in the Office of Student Media earned local honors at the annual American Advertising Awards gala on Feb. 16 in Columbia, including the Student Best of Show award. More than 50 awards, known as ADDYs, recognizing exceptional work in advertising were presented to professionals and students in the Midlands.

A team from Garnet & Black including creative director Grace Steptoe, former creative director and designer Rachel Johnson, public relations director (and former editor-in-chief) Brennan Booker and photography editor Alyssa-Leigh Willey earned two top awards for the four magazine covers from 2018: a gold ADDY in the cover series category and the Student Best of Show judges’ award. Booker and Johnson also won a gold ADDY for the spring 2018 cover design. Current editor-in-chief Caroline Fairey, alongside Steptoe, Willey, and art director Gracie Newton, earned a silver ADDY in the magazine design category for the winter 2018 issue. Steptoe, Newton and Willey also earned a silver ADDY for an editorial spread for their work on Garnet & Black’s fall 2018 cover story, “Empowerment.” Newton also won a separate silver ADDY for illustration for her work on the “Citation Needed” spread in the summer 2018 issue.

According to the American Advertising Federation of the Midlands’ website, the American Advertising Awards “embody the true spirit of creative excellence by recognizing advertising in all forms and media from entrants of all levels around the country.” Winners in the AAF’s Midlands competition advance to district and, later, national competitions.
