UofSC graduates celebrate May commencement



Thousands of University of South Carolina students from around the system will participate in annual spring commencement ceremonies, with USC Columbia ceremonies taking place Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12, 2018 in the Colonial Life Arena.

Bachelor’s, master’s and professional degree commencement ceremonies in Columbia include:

  • 3 p.m. ceremony on Friday, May 11 for graduates of the Darla Moore School of Business, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy and the Arnold School of Public Health. Burt Bacharach, acclaimed composer, songwriter and producer, will receive an honorary degree.
  • 9:30 a.m. ceremony on Saturday, May 12 for the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Information and Communications and South Carolina Honors College. Peter McCausland, accomplished business leader, philanthropist and USC alumnus, will receive an honorary degree and deliver remarks to graduates.
  • 3 p.m. ceremony on Saturday, May 12 for the College of Education; College of Engineering and Computing; College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management; Interdisciplinary Programs; Palmetto College; School of Music and College of Social Work. Celebrated glass sculpture artist and visionary entrepreneur Dale Chihuly will receive an honorary degree.

The School of Law ceremony takes place on Friday, May 11 at 9 a.m. on USC’s historic Horseshoe. South Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Donald W. Beatty will receive an honorary degree and address graduates.

The Schools of Medicine commencement ceremony will take place on Friday, May 11 at 12 p.m. in the Koger Center. Dr. Gerald E. Harmon, distinguished physician and humanitarian, will receive an honorary degree and address graduates.

The doctoral hooding ceremony takes place Saturday, May 12 at 1 p.m. in the Koger Center. Julius Fridriksson, a professor and noted stroke researcher in the Arnold School of Public Health will address graduates.

Overall, more than 6,700 students will be graduating from the Columbia campus this May and nearly 8,500 from the entire USC system.

USC Salkehatchie: Friday, May 4, 10:30 a.m. Speaker: Trustee Miles Loadholt.
USC Beaufort: Friday, May 4, 5:30 p.m. Speaker: U.S. Rep. James Clyburn. USC Trustee Wes Jones will receive an honorary degree.
USC Lancaster: Saturday, May 5, 2:30 p.m. Speaker: County Councilwoman Charlene McGriff.
USC Union: Saturday, May 5, 6 p.m. Speaker: U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman.
USC Upstate: Tuesday, May 8, 6 p.m. Speaker: Chancellor Brendan Kelly.
USC Sumter: Wednesday, May 9, 11 a.m. Speaker: Santee-Lynches Regional Council of Governments CEO Christopher McKinney.
USC Aiken: Wednesday, May 9, 6 p.m. Speaker and honorary degree recipient: U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Charles L. Munns (retired). Retired business executive Ernest R. Allen will receive an honorary degree.
