Campus Conversation: Nancy Jones

" I emailed with President Caslen and Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies Sandra Kelly because I was concerned about asynchronous classes on Election Day being a barrier to voting and I got a phenomenal response from them. Vice Provost Kelly informed me that '[the asynchronous classes are] listed on Election Day but that was just to let students and faculty [know] roughly when the class would fit into the whole course schedule… students may take the whole day to turn out for the vote.' She also took the step to communicate that out to the other deans and faculty so the whole Gamecock community would be on the same page.

Just in case some students aren’t aware, however, they should know that they don’t have to worry about making a choice between exercising their right to vote and succeeding in their classes. They have the leeway to dedicate the whole day to voting. Regardless of the outcome in November and regardless of which side of the aisle you are on, recognize that you have tremendous power as an individual to shape the narrative of your community. Think of the impact you can have over your lifetime if you start doing small things now and continue to do them over the next 70 years. Get started."
