The Opportunity Scholars Program (OSP) supports
TRIO-eligible students seeking to earn degrees at the University
of South Carolina. Program services include freshman orientation
activities, mentoring by upper-class students, academic support
services, cultural enrichment, and a curriculum of freshman-level
courses taught by OSP faculty. These courses (English, history,
psychology, and math) satisfy both graduation and general
education requirements. OSP students also enroll in University
101, the college orientation course. The Opportunity Scholars
Programs offers all of the advantages of a small college environment
at a major research university.
The Opportunity Scholars Program receives significant
support from the federal Student Support Services program.
Since 1972, the OSP has worked to increase the retention and
graduation rates of low-income, first-generation students
enrolled at USC.
