Every student deserves equal access to all aspects of the UofSC experience. Our team coordinates
efforts to ensure that students with disabilities receive reasonable accommodations,
and we serve as consultants to faculty, staff and campus partners.
Dr. Karen Pettus, Director of the SDRC, is retiring!
Karen’s first stint at the University was from 1994 to 2002 when she served as Director
of the Office of Disability Services. She took a three year hiatus where to oversee
counseling services at Midlands Technical College. She returned to UofSC in 2005
and has been overseeing the Student Disability Resource Center since that time – a
total of 23 years at UofSC. During this time, Karen has worked diligently to create
a new space for the Student Disability Resource Center to give students a safe and
inclusive space to learn and engage, and to provide equal opportunities for students
to participate in all aspects of the Carolina community and to eliminate many disability
related barriers. Through her efforts, we can see how the Carolina community has and
continues to embrace diversity and inclusion. Karen has demonstrated her commitment
to social justice and disability advocacy by working tirelessly with our campus departments
and partners to ensure all students feel seen, heard, and understood. A Gamecock with
deep roots, she also earned both her master of education degree and Ph.D. in educational
psychology/research from UofSC as well.
Upon Karen’s departure, Sonia Badesha will assume the role as interim director of
the SDRC. We plan to initiate a national search in the fall.
Please join us in thanking Karen for her 23 years of service as a Gamecock!
