I have a student that needs to take a leave of absence from college, what steps must be taken to return?

If a student misses a major semester (e.g. Fall or Spring) whether it be for illness or just for a break, s/he will need to re-apply to the University. Once s/he is reaccepted for the upcoming semester, s/he will need to be advised by that major department. If it is the same major, the department should have a file on the student. If it is a new major, the student will need his/her transcript evaluated by the new college for the major to be aware of the courses taken and how it falls into their degree requirements. If the student was not in “good academic standing” when s/he left USC, the student will need to petition the college and department that are desired even if it is the one that the student was part when s/he left USC. Good academic standing is when the student has above a 2.0 USC GPA.

What is the difference between a Cognate and a Minor?

A Cognate is 12 hours that support the major. They must be at an advanced level outside of the major. It can be taken in one or more departments. The courses should have a certain type of cohesiveness. They must be passed with a grade of C or higher.

A Minor is 18 hours of prescribed courses outside of the major. The courses are concentrated in one area and follow a structured sequence. The courses that are used must be passed with a grade of C or higher. At least half of the courses must be taken in residence at the University. The minor will be listed on the student's final transcript.

I have a student that wants to leave the University, what steps does s/he take?

The student needs to drop all classes at USC if it is before the last day to do so without a "W" for a full refund. If it is after the last day to drop without a "W", the student will need to withdraw with the "W" and also select the option that asks "If s/he is withdrawing completely from USC?" If the student selects that option, s/he will need to refer to the refund schedule on the Registrar's Website. If it is after the last to drop with a "W", the student needs an appointment in his/her Dean's Office to discuss an "Extenuating Circumstance Withdrawl" which will require documentation.
