n December 19, 1801, South Carolina College was chartered as one of the nation's first publicly supported institutions of higher education.
On January 10, 1805, the first students entered South Carolina College and thus began the history not only of the University of South Carolina, but also of publicly supported higher education in South Carolina.
On January 10, 2001, the University began a year of commemoration and celebration which culminated on December 19, 2001. During this year the University sponsored a number of events that were held in Columbia and throughout the state. Programs included international conferences, symposia, special public events and many other kinds of activities.
