 o represent the citizens of our state and our nation ensuring that the year 2001—the bicentennial of higher education in South Carolina and of the University of South Carolina—shall provide a worthy commemoration of the heritage of this University, the high ideal upon which it was founded, and its intrinsic relationship to the life and progress of South Carolina, and that this Bicentennial year shall offer to all the people meaningful opportunities for learning, discovery, remembrance, reflection, ambition, excitement, and celebration.
