Harry H. Turney-High

A native of Kansas City, Mo.,
Turney-High earned a bachelor’s
degree from St. Stephen’s College in 1922 and an MA and Ph.D. in anthropology (in 1924 and 1928, respectively) from the University of Wisconsin. He came to the University of South Carolina in 1946 and served with distinction as head of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology from 1946 to 1965. He was the author of a number of books and articles, including Primitive War: Its Practices and Concepts (1953), which have since been reprinted in several editions.
