Semester of Service is a project of the University of South Carolina Bicentennial Celebration to encourage students to reach out to the community and recognize those students and organizations that contribute to the Carolina Community through service. Semester of Service will take place both spring and fall semesters of 2001 to coincide with the founding year of the university, 1801. Semester of Service will kick-off January 27, 2001 on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Serving others is an important part of the universitys overall mission of community spirit, and USC students may serve in a variety of ways. Whether it is assisting the elderly at the State Fair, volunteering in a middle school, or raising money for Childrens Hospital, USC students are serving the community. Semester of Service is a way for students to be encouraged to participate in service and to register their hours served. The university will celbrate students contributions to the Carolina Community through awards and recognition. Students may register their hours either by organization or individually by completing a Semester of Service Registration Form. Forms can be filled out directly on the website or found in the Office of Community Service Programs. Registering as a Student Organization The organization form should list the name of each student who participates in service during the event for which hours are being registered. The hours are then totaled and monitored until the end of the fall semester, 2001. It is not necessary for individuals within the organization to register separately.
