Best friends and South Carolina College students Govan Roach of Colleton County and James G. Adams of Richland County fight a pistol duel on the outskirts of Columbia after an argument over a plate of fish at the college dining hall. Adams was severely wounded and died several hours later.

Roach never recovered from his wounds and died a few years later.
