James Henley Thornwell, a professor at South Carolina College and a Presbyterian minister considered one of the most prominent religious figures in the South, is named sixth president. Thornwell was committed to the idea of conservative, classical education    and exerted a great deal

of influence over the nature of the antebellum college.
