During the burning of Columbia after the arrival of Union General William T. Sherman, the buildings of the South Carolina College are saved by the combined efforts of Union troops and staff in the hospital located on campus. Emma LeConte, daughter of professor Joseph LeConte who lived in the present Leiber College, recorded in her diary that she had believed it inevitable that the entire college would succumb to flames.
