The Board of Trustees names James Woodrow 11th president of South Carolina College. A Presbyterian minister, he served as president until 1897. A progressive thinker of his time, he attempted to reconcile Christian theology with Darwin's theory of evolution—a position which made him controversial. A native of England who was educated in Germany, Woodrow led the institution through some of its most difficult years.
