THE TWENTY-FIFTH ANNUAL BYZANTINE STUDIES CONFERENCE
CALL FOR PAPERS
The Twenty-fifth Annual Byzantine Studies Conference will be held at the University of Maryland, College Park, from Thursday evening, November 4, through Sunday lunch time, November 7, 1999. The conference is the annual forum for the presentation and discussion of papers on every aspect of Byzantine studies, and is open to all, regardless of nationality or academic status.
In celebration of the 25th year of the BSC, we are encouraging papers or sessions that attempt in some way to assess the state of a particular issue or area of study. Proposals for entire panels, including abstracts, suggested chairs, and commentators, are welcome, but all abstracts will be reviewed and accepted individually. Thus far the following topics for sessions have been suggested: Byzantine Literature and Literary Methods, Contemporary Theory in Byzantine Art History; the State of Byzantine Archaeology; Byzantine identity; the Senses; Reassessing Ritual; Nature and the Environment; Gifts and Gift giving in Byzantium; Canon Law; the Classical Heritage in Byzantium; Gender in Byzantium; Coins and Seals; the Crusader East; Authenticity, Fakes and Forgeries; Middle Byzantine Ivories; Byzantine Egypt; Apocalyptic; and a session in honor of Seka Allen.
To have a paper considered for the program, please submit an abstract following these guidelines:
1. All proposed papers must be substantially original and never
have been published or presented previously in a public forum. Only
one paper may be delivered by each contributor. At the discretion
of the Program Committee, preference in paper acceptance may be
given to those who did not present a paper at the last BSC.20
2. The abstract should be no more than 500 words in length and
should indicate the paper's original contribution in sufficient
detail and with some indication of the contributor's conclusions so
that the Program Committee may fairly assess its merits. It is
expected that papers will be limited to 15 minutes in length.
Please follow the enclosed guidelines for the formatting of your
abstract, which, if accepted, will be printed in the BSC's
Abstracts of Papers. Abstracts should include your name, address,
any academic affiliation, phone and fax numbers and e-mail address,
the paper's title, a preferred session (if any), and any projection
or other special facilities required. Graduate students should
indicate their status.
3. In order to have your abstract considered, you must be a member
of the BSC in good standing. Please see the enclosed sheet for the
Annual Dues Requirement.
4. Abstracts should be postmarked no later than March 15, 1999, or
March 10, 1999, if submitted from abroad, and sent to Kathleen
Corrigan, Program Chair, Dartmouth College, Department of Art
History, 6033 Carpenter Hall, Hanover, NH 03755. (for inquiries:
telephone 603-646-2307 or e-mail: Kathleen.Corrigan@Dartmouth.edu;
please do not send abstracts by e-mail)
5. Notice of acceptance or rejection will be mailed by mid May.
Accepted abstracts will be published as originally submitted unless
a revised version is received by June 30, 1999.
6. The submission of an abstract and its acceptance represents a
commitment from the contributor to read the paper in person at the
Conference. Those who cannot attend must withdraw their papers no
later than June 30, 1999. Failure to do so may adversely affect
future chances for the acceptance of proposed papers.
7. All abstracts will be reviewed by each member of the Program
Committee: Kathleen Corrigan (Art History, Dartmouth College),
Georgia Frank (Religion, Colgate), Maria Georgopoulou (Art History,
Yale), Eric Ivison (History, College of Staten Island, CUNY),
Sarolta Takacs (Classics, Harvard)
